Elegy, a lament for the dead.

Since 2011, my work has explored the intersection of memory, biology, and family through a series of portraits using medical imagery: histopathology slides, X-rays, and scans. These “histo-portraits” merge scientific illustration with traditional drawing, painting, and unconventional portraiture to map the physical and emotional journeys of my loved ones. In my current series, I embroider these portraits using traditional women’s craft, transforming the artwork into elegies that honor the bodies and lives of the women I’ve lost. The embroidery serves as a memorial and an act of mending and repair. I’ve further embedded their memories in the artwork by incorporating materials imbued with personal meaning: ink made from the ashes of medical records, textiles and papers left behind, and cremated ashes. These works combine fine art and traditional women’s craft as acts of remembrance and posthumous caregiving.
